Faith Groups

Men’s Group

The Somascan Men’s Ministry is a movement of men from the ages of 30-45 (or older!) based on the spirituality of the Somascan Fathers. It allows for young men to gather together to grow in fraternity and faith – with the pillars of the movement being:

  1. Brotherhood
  2. Formation
  3. Dialogue/sharing
  4. Prayer.

This group was founded with a desire to form young Catholic men to grow stronger in their faith and their identity as men, in a society that tries so desperately to destroy the importance of men in society.

Founded based on the Somascan Spirituality, the ministry aims to infuse the charism first given by the Holy Spirit to the founder of the Somascan Fathers, St. Jerome Emiliani – the Paternal love of God.

We meet once a month, typically on the last Tuesday of each month. It has helped many of us in recent years grow stronger in our brotherhood, Catholic faith and love of Jesus. It is a gift to share this news and we are now pleased to extend the invite to men in our parish.

The Association of St. Lucy

The Saint Lucy Association had its beginnings with the Galipo family. Throughout the 1940’s, Giuseppe Galipo had suffered from an undiagnosed eye complaint and in 1950 he decided to undertake surgery. Dr Robert Linton, a prominent eye specialist, successfully operated on both eyes.   Calogero (Charlie) Galipo, so impressed by his father’s some-what miraculous recovery, donated a statue of Saint Lucy to the Spearwood Parish. He arranged for its construction in Bolzano (Italy) and its transportation to Fremantle. The inscription on the statue reads: “Donated by Calogero Galipo. In thanksgiving for favour received.”  Father Chokolich blessed the statue and placed it in a position of prominence in the church. Devotion to Saint Lucy soon became widespread and the Galipo family established a fund to assist the parish. Following three days of prayer, parishioners adorned the statue with jewellery and pinned money on an attached ribbon. The Spearwood faithful then trekked throughout the district with Saint Lucy leading the way and the celebration finished with evening festivities.  This has become an annual event, which takes place about the time of St Lucy’s Feast Day in December.

Seniors Club

St. Jerome’s Seniors club has been operating as a non profit group for 7 years. It is a non denominational group for seniors, devoted to fun, friendship and good company. The meetings are held in the St. Lucy’s room in the Parish hall every Monday.  The seniors club consists of approximately 25 members and warmly welcomes new members to their group.

St. Vincent De Paul Group

St. Vincent de Paul has been very active in our parish for many years. The purpose of this group is to reach out to our needy brothers and sisters belonging to our catholic community. The members meet twice a month to pray and deepen their spirituality.  The St Vincent de Paul association welcomes new members to join their group.

Rosary Statue of St. Jerome

Devotion to our Lady of the Rosary is carried out in our Parish.  The statue of our Lady of the Rosary has been visiting several families in our parish for many years. If any family would like to have their name added to the roster, kindly contact the Parish Office

Queen of the May Organization

For many years now on the first Sunday of May, the children of St Jerome’s have been honouring Mary, Queen of the May. In May, in the Northern Hemisphere, spring is in full bloom. The tradition was to decorate Mary’s roadside shrines as you passed by – stopping to leave a blossom and say a prayer. Today as we remember this tradition we bring flowers and place a crown on the statue of Mary. On the first Sunday in May during the 10am Mass, the Children’s Liturgy continues the tradition of honouring Mary as Queen of the May. During the Offertory Procession, children process forward to the altar. They carry bouquets of flowers. When they arrive at Mary’s statue they kneel and pray while two previously selected children (usually First Holy Communion Candidates from the year before) place a crown on the statue of Mary. This is to remind us all that Mary is not only our mother, but Queen of our hearts, Queen of us all and Queen of the May.’

St Jerome’s Primary School and School Board

St Jerome’s is a co-educational Catholic primary school with over 700 students enrolled in Pre Kindy to Year 6. The school is three streamed and the staff is hardworking and committed to providing a high level of pastoral care and quality education for their students. The school is an integral part of the St Jerome’s Parish and there is a very close relationship between the school and parish. The School Board’s function is to plan for the present and future operation of the school. Its members include the school principal, the Parish Priest as an Ex-Officio member, a chairman and representatives of both the Parish Council and the Parents and Friends Association.

The Cleaning group

The cleaning group is made up of five groups of volunteers consisting of three or four people in each group. A group has its turn every five weeks. They come on Saturday morning for two hours to clean the church. This includes vacuuming, dusting and other domestic duties.

Counting Group

The members of the counting group are split into seven groups. They have a roster to count the weekly collections and planned giving envelope offerings.
